Ruta 226 Km 73,5, (7620) Balcarce, Buenos\nAires, Argentina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nThe\nCO<sub>2<\/sub>\nand\nO<sub>2<\/sub>\nconcentration\nin hermetic storage systems depends on the balance between\nrespiration of the ecosystem (consumption of O<sub>2\n<\/sub>and\ngeneration of CO<sub>2<\/sub>),\nthe entrance of external O<sub>2\n<\/sub>to\nthe system, and the loss of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\nto\nthe ambient air. A preliminary model was developed to simulate the\ngas exchange in silo-bags, considering the aerobic grains and\nmicroflora CO<sub>2<\/sub>\nproduction and neglecting the contribution by insect respiration.\nDependence of the rate of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\nproduction on grain temperature, moisture content and storage time\nwas taken into account and evaluated by use of the correlation\ndeveloped by White <em>et\nal.<\/em>\n(1982) for wheat. The influence of initial grain temperature (25, 30\nand 43\u00baC) and moisture content (12 -16 % w.b.) as well as degree of\ngas-tightness of the silo-bag was investigated. The model was run for\nthe climatic conditions of the south east of Buenos Aires province,\nArgentina, for a storage period of 6 months, from January to July.\nThe gas concentration predicted by the model under different storage\nconditions was compared with data available from a series of field\nexperiments developed by INTA-EEA Balcarce. Globally, predicted\nvalues were in good accordance with the measured levels of gas\nconcentrations. For all temperatures, at 12% w.b, the CO<sub>2<\/sub>\nconcentration\nremained below 4%. At 30\u00baC and 14% w.b., CO<sub>2<\/sub>\nlevel\nincreased to 12%. At 15% and 16% w.b, O<sub>2<\/sub>\nwas\nconsumed after 80 and 40 days, respectively. CO<sub>2\n<\/sub>reached\n21% and then, because of the loss to ambient air (differential\npermeability for O<sub>2<\/sub>\nand\nCO<sub>2<\/sub>),\nit fell below 16%. At 43\u00baC, O<sub>2<\/sub>\nwas\nconsumed after 80 and 25 and 10 days, for 14, 15 and 16% w.b.\nrespectively.
